• Live Blog: Penn State at Michigan State

The Nittany Lions are in East Lansing for the regular season finale against the Spartans. Kicker Joey Julius, DE Garrett Sickels, TE Mike Gesicki and CB Christian Campbell all missed the trip for Penn State. Carl Nassib is back for Penn State and will anchor the defensive line with Anthony Zettel on the other end, and Austin Johnson plus Tarow Barney on the inside. Andrew Nelson gets the start at left tackle. Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook was announced as the starter, but looked limited in warmups. Follow along live for updates from East Lansing.

    First Quarter

15:00: Michigan State kickoff goes out of bounds to start the game. Lions get the game going on the 35.

14:14: Two runs, one by Christian Hackenberg and one by Saquon Barkley gets PSU a first down.

13:12: Hackenberg lobs up a deep ball to WR Geno Lewis, but it is intercepted in the end zone. MSU QB Connor Cook takes over on offense.

9:35: TOUCHDOWN – MSU QB Connor Cook finds R.J. Shelton for a quick score. Shelton burned the coverage on the play action. PAT was missed. 6-0 Spartans.

6:10: Hackenberg and the offense stall around midfield. Hackenberg had WR DeAndre Thompkins wide open for a first down, but he elected to toss a deep ball to Hamilton. It was under thrown.

3:28: PSU CB Grant Haley makes a nice play on a third down pass to break it up. Gregg Garrity fields the punt for the Lions, and they will take over on offense at the 36.

1:23: Penn State goes for it on fourth down and Hackenberg rockets one to Godwin for a first. Nice throw and catch into a tight window.

0:00: Penn State has a goal-to-go situation with four downs to score as the quarter expires. Thanks to a missed PAT, the Lions could take the lead early in the second as MSU leads 6-0.

    Second Quarter

14:18: SCORE – Penn State settles for a field goal on the 1-yard line. Have to wonder what the harm in going for it would be. Michigan State lead cut in half, 6-3.

12:13: Penn State defense comes up big to halt the Spartans at midfield. Lions take over on their own 12.

10:52: Hackenberg is sacked on third down on the 5-yard line. Michigan State with the ball on the PSU 49.

7:12: TOUCHDOWN – Michigan State RB Gerald Holmes punches one in from six yards out. Nice series for the shifty tailback to set up and convert the goal-to-go situation. This time the extra point is good. Spartans up, 13-3.

2:36: TOUCHDOWN – PSU TE Kyle Carter catches a pass, but fumbles it. Spartans return it for a long touchdown with some great moves on the way to the end zone. Michigan State up 20-3.

0:35: TOUCHDOWN – Hackenberg hits Godwin for an 8-yard touchdown. Michigan State up 20-10 now. Spartans get ball first in second half.

0:00: Michigan State’s backup QB comes in to try something. Ends up fumbling it for no consequence. Spartans up 20-10, and will receive the ball first in the second half.

    Third Quarter

11:40: TOUCHDOWN – MSU WR Aaron Burbridge comes down with a catch and makes a couple nice moves, diving for a score. PAT is good. Michigan State takes a 27-10 lead. Very poor tackling by PSU safety Marcus Allen on the play.

10:41: Penn State cannot answer on offense as Hackenberg’s pass to Hamilton for a first down is incomplete. Spartans ball on their own 31.

4:06: Michigan State is methodically working its way down the field. Goal-to-go for the Spartans now. Threatening a big lead.

3:31: TOUCHDOWN – MSU TE sheds his block and sneaks into the end zone uncovered for a score. Spartans have opened up a 34-10 lead over Penn State.

2:24: Hackenberg hits WR Saeed Blacknall for a 77-yard catch and run. MSU defender chased him down and popped it out, but Blacknall recovered.

1:36: Penn State burns a timeout on 3rd and goal. Need a touchdown to stay alive. Have to think it’s fourth down territory, too.

1:19: The Lions get lucky with a pass interference call in the end zone to give them a fresh set of downs. Contact was made, but wasn’t a big push. Have to call it in the end zone though.

0:00: Penn State has 3rd and goal, down 34-10 when the final quarter of the regular season begins.

    Fourth Quarter

14:51: TOUCHDOWN – Hackenberg fires to Godwin, who pulls it in, for a score. Two-point conversion attempt hits off Blacknall’s hands. Spartans up 34-16.

14:49: Penn State tries an onside kick, but it goes right to the Spartans.

11:18: TOUCHDOWN – Michigan State punches in another score, this one from six yards out. 3 and a half minutes off the clock. Spartans up 41-16.

9:56: TOUCHDOWN – Hackenberg’s pass is tipped at the line and picked off for a touchdown. Spartans up 48-16.

9:48: TOUCHDOWN – Michigan State gets the ball back on a muffed kickoff. Spartans rolling, up 55-16.
