Silas Redd plowed into the end zone from the 3 with 1:08 left, lifting No. 19 Penn State to a bizarre 10-7 victory over Illinois Saturday at snowy Beaver Stadium.
The victory gave coach Joe Paterno his 409th career win, passing Eddie Robinson for the Division I record.
Penn State sealed the win when Derek Dimke’s 42-yard field goal try hit the right upright.
Redd carried 30 times for 137 yards and topped 1,000 yards for the season.
The Nittany Lions moved to 5-0 in the Big Ten and 8-1 overall before taking off next week. Illinois fell to 2-3, 6-3 with its third straight loss.
After a scoreless struggle, the Fighting Iilini’s Nathan Scheelhaase threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Harris in the third quarter.
Anthony Fera kicked a 30-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter for Penn State’s first points.
The Lions had 139 total yards before McGloin completed 4-of-6 passes for 58 yards on the game-winning drive.
Penn State’s defense came up with four turnovers.
